OUR APPROACH

OUR PROCESS

Our factory and showroom is located in the Blue Mountains village of Katoomba. We do things traditionally, crafting in solid timber with mortise and tenon joins. Your windows and doors will remain beautiful, functional and stable for decades ensuring maximum value for your investment.

We manufacture-to-order for residential and commercial projects: new builds, extensions, or restorations. Expert in reproducing heritage window and door styles of bygone eras, we can match existing profiles that incorporate high-performance glazing.

We offer a thorough design and supply service. In consultation with you, we advise on product type, timber choice, glazing, finishes and hardware. Visit our Katoomba showroom to view a  selection of our windows and doors, or browse Specifications to inform your decision about timber and glazing.

SUSTAINBILITY

WHY TIMBER?

BECAUSE WE LOVE IT!

Against the Grain only craft in timber; a beautiful, versatile and natural material that achieves high levels of performance and durability. Unlike other man-made manufacturing materials, timber sourced from responsibly managed forests and plantations is a renewable and sustainable option.

Timber offers a way to reduce the amount of atmospheric carbon, which helps to address climate change. As trees grow, they take carbon out of the atmosphere through the process of photosynthesis. The carbon remains stored in all timber products for the life of the product. As it ages, timber doesn't break down into environmentally damaging materials.

We specify timber species appropriate for windows and doors to stand the test of time. Never  veneered or engineered timbers - solid select grade timber only. Where cedar is requested we only use termite resistant Western Red Cedar, which remains dimensionally stable under most weather conditions and is not prone to shrinkage.

FSC & RAINFOREST ALLIANCE TIMBERS

Against the Grain manufacture with both imported and Australian timbers sourced from accredited suppliers who offer The Forest Stewardship Council and Rainforest Alliance products wherever possible.

FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of forests in Australia and countries supplying the Australian forest products market.

The Rainforest Alliance offers forest product companies voluntary independent third-party verification of legal status for the sources of raw materials for their products. Certification confirms a sustainable agricultural supply chain.

TESTIMONIALS
HDMB-Leichhardt-0231.jpg

The New Guinea Rosewood windows and entry doors are outstanding with beautiful stained glass. Against the Grain had a good range of stained glass from which to select and our choice matched our window style and the character of the house.

FELIX & ANTONIA S.  BLACKHEATH

What Against the Grain say they will deliver they do in spades.  To say they went above and beyond is an understatement. During bushfires, Covid and every kind of weather they turned up on time and worked with great care and craftsmanship. The team at Against the Grain are outstanding and really decent people. We are both thrilled with the result they delivered for us and have no hesitation in highly recommending them.
